Major in GAIT – and Maybe Go to School for FREE!

At Appalachian State University every year thousands of dollars are awarded to students interested in pursuing a career in the Graphic Arts industry. Students interested in graphic and web design, packaging, printing, publishing, and many other related industries are being awarded scholarships sponsored by the Thomas W. Reese Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology (GAIT) program and their industry partners.

This year Jessica Melton, a senior in the Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology program, was awarded almost $10,000 in Graphic Arts scholarships, enough to pay for a full year at Appalachian State and cover part of her off-campus housing costs. These scholarships included the NAPCO Technology Scholarship ($1,250), Thomas W. Reese GAIT Scholarship ($700), Tag and Label Manufacturing Institute Scholarship ($5,000), and the Flexographic Technical Association Scholarship ($3,000). The first two scholarships, NAPCO and Thomas W. Reese GAIT Scholarship, are just two of eight different scholarships available to ASU Graphic Arts majors. This past academic year 14 GAIT students were awarded scholarships worth $12,250 from these eight different scholarship funds.  In fact, the Graphic Arts program has the largest number of scholarships available to majors within the Department of Technology and Environmental Design.

The latter two scholarships, TLMI and FTA scholarships, select a limited number of nationwide students who compete for these awards every year. Jessica was one of six recipients awarded the TLMI scholarship and one of six recipients awarded the FTA scholarship.

Jessica says “Without the support of scholarship money from Graphic Arts industry partners and program support, I’d be responsible for taking out student loans to cover tuition and housing. The financial assistance I received from these awards has allowed me to focus on my studies and forego working a part-time job to cover housing expenses. I chose Graphic Arts because I knew there was more support here than any other program I looked at when applying to Appalachian State and it’s a great degree. I know I made the right decision.”

Most scholarships require a 3.0 GPA or higher, two letters of recommendation (which GAIT faculty are more than willing to provide), a cover letter or short essay on the need for the scholarship, and a written or typed application.
